Bioengineering Graduate Society (BEGS) at UC San Diego is one of the longest continuously-running societies of its kind in the United States. Through outreach, industry collaboration, and support from faculty & staff, we represent the interests of the top-tier cohort of graduate students in the Department of Bioengineering at UC San Diego.
Professional Development
BEGS facilitates interaction between students and industry / alumni in the San Diego community. BEGS offers opportunities for students to build professional networks, to improve communication & leadership skills, and to identify post-graduate opportunities by organizing events such as Breakfast With Industry (BWI) & Bioengineering Day (BE Day).
Community Development
BEGS helps foster a greater sense of community within the department. We aim to facilitate healthy and productive communication among our peers, and also with department faculty and staff. From hosting the annual Bear Hug social hour to kick off the Fall Quarter, to organizing fun group activities like game nights and hiking trips, to implementing departmental policy on the behalf of the graduate student body at departmental Town Hall meetings, we help keep UCSD Bioengineering the best place to be a graduate student!
Outreach
BEGS engages in outreach efforts to spread awareness of and inspire involvement in bioengineering, at the campus, county, and national level. Our members are involved in projects such as:
elementary school outreach at Lafayette Elementary School, high school outreach at Clairemont High School, undergraduate mentorship, hosting booths at the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering (SDFSE) and the USA Science & Engineering Festival in Washington, D.C.
