Christopher Ahn (on the left, here with Professor Cabrales at a BEGS Event) is President of Bioengineering Graduate Society for the 2013-2014 term, and a 2nd year Ph.D. student studying metabolic systems biology in the laboratory of Professor Christian Metallo. Chris joined Bioengineering Graduate Society to help improve the graduate school experience for bioengineers here at UCSD. Please don't hesitate to contact him if there's anything he can do for you!
Spencer Scott is the External Vice President for BEGS and is in the 2nd year of his PhD here at UCSD and researches synthetic biology in the Hasty Lab. In his spare time, he trains for and runs triathlons, in addition to taking photographs.
Garrett Graham is the Internal Vice President for BEGS and a second year Master's Student. While he was at the University of Richmond, he studied Math and Physics while running cross country and track. After a year of safety kayaking in Thailand and Nepal, Garrett is studying microfluidics in the Hasty Lab. In his spare time, you can find Garret daydreaming about charging the gnar in his creekboat back on the narrows of the Green River, North Carolina.
John De Friel is the Vice President of Finance for BEGS and a PhD student in the Hasty Laboratory. His research focuses on engineering microbial communities for sensing and degrading environmental pollutants. Outside of the lab he can be found exploring the mountains, desert, ocean, and rivers of the Southwest United States.
Alistair McIntyre is VP of Communications for BEGS. He is in his first year of pursuing a Master's Degree in Bioengineering and his research will focus on tissue engineering. Alistair continues to play ultimate Frisbee at the club level, having played for all four years at the University of Minnesota and currently playing for the UCSD Air Squids.
Chairs and Representatives
Sindhu Raghunandan is the Chair - Outreach for the Bioengineering Graduate Society. She is a third year PhD student in the Subramaniam lab and her research is based on implementing systems biology and bioinformatics methods to study the metabolic drivers of liver cancer. In her free time she enjoys singing.
Daniel Jacobsen is the Chair - Breakfast With Industry, Chair - Recruitment, and a Bioengineering Graduate Student Association Representative. He is a second year PhD studying Integrative Genomics. Outside of research, Daniel likes to sail.
Justin Tan is a BEGS GSA Rep for the year 2013-2014. He is a first year PhD student in Bioengineering and is currently working in the Systems Biology Research Group under Dr. Palsson doing research on microbial communities. Having played rugby for the past 13 years, Justin enjoys playing sports and being active. He is currently learning how to surf and playing IM flag football for the BEGS team.
Tony Yen is the incumbent Jacobs Graduate Student Council (JGSC) representative for BEGS, in charge of communicating cross-organizational events. As a 2nd year master student from the bioengineering department, Tony researches and develops molecular/cellular-based diagnostic technology for the Lo Group in ECE department. Outside of school, Tony enjoys tennis, basketball, swimming, and reading during his free time.
Elbert Mai is a 1st year bioengineering Ph.D. student serving as a Jacobs Graduate Student Council representative for BEGS. Elbert is a NSF Graduate Research Fellow currently in a lab rotation with Dr. Peter Yingxiao Wang. As of this writing, his research focus involves molecular biosensor design and fabrication for observing cellular signalling pathways. When Elbert is not doing bioengineering work, he can be found cycling or engaging in "do-it-yourself" activities such as home improvement projects and computer-building.
Varsha Vijayan, Jacobs Graduate School Council Rep and Breakfast with Industry chair, is a second year MS Bioengineering student trying to apply statistical modeling to understand sleep architecture as part of research. She is also a self-proclaimed (avid) reader, writer and hiker.
Jahir Gutierrez is the Chair - Bioengineering Day and a second year MS student. His research focuses on reconstructing genome scale metabolic networks and statistical analysis of phenotypic data using the systems biology approach. Besides science and education, Jahir is also passionate about music and song writing.
Kara Johnson is the current Alumni Liaison for BEGS. She is a first year Ph.D. student from UC Davis interested in epigenetics and gene regulation. While she has many interests outside of her research, a few of her favorite are gymnastics, cooking, and being crafty.
James Lin is the Chair - M.Eng and is pursuing the M.Eng. in Bioengineering. He is interested in an industry career in biomaterials and loves to play basketball in his spare time.
